Africa's biodiversity is under siege from three deeply interconnected threats. Each one is serious alone — together, they are devastating. WildShield Africa was built to confront all three simultaneously through policy, governance, and enforcement.

01 — Legislation

Outdated Laws

Nigeria's foundational wildlife laws — including the Endangered Species Act of 1985 — have not been meaningfully updated in four decades. They fail to account for climate change, modern technology, or the scale of today's ecological pressures. Without reform, enforcement remains weak and conservation remains optional.

02 — Encroachment

Human Expansion

Expanding agricultural frontiers and growing rural settlements push deeper into protected national parks each year, driving habitat fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict, and the gradual erosion of buffer zones that once sheltered critical ecosystems. Communities are not the enemy — but without viable alternatives, encroachment continues.

03 — Poaching

Systemic Poaching

Porous park boundaries, chronically underfunded ranger networks, and sophisticated trafficking syndicates exploit weak legal enforcement to drive transboundary wildlife crime across West and Central Africa. Without inter-agency coordination and stronger institutional capacity, poaching will continue to decimate Africa's most iconic species.

Legislative Reform

Modernise the Law

We develop and submit comprehensive policy briefs to Nigeria's National Assembly, the Ministry of Environment, and the National Park Service — advocating for the full overhaul of outdated conservation legislation. Our goal is a legal framework with stiffer penalties, modern regulatory mechanisms, and clear institutional mandates that reflect 21st-century ecological realities.

Community Governance

Empower Communities

We design and implement community-led landscape zoning frameworks that integrate rural economic development with buffer-zone management. By creating sustainable livelihoods within and around protected areas, we resolve human-wildlife conflict at its root — transforming park neighbors from a source of pressure into Africa's most committed biodiversity guardians.

Enforcement

Disrupt Trafficking

We lobby for and facilitate inter-agency coordination linking the National Park Service, customs officials, local security networks, and international wildlife tracking databases. By building institutional synergy across agencies, we reinforce park borders, improve intelligence sharing, and dismantle the infrastructure that enables transboundary wildlife smuggling at scale.
